War is a Shocking Loss of Innocence.
MORAL INJURY occurs.. when we experience events that violate our moral code.. violates acceptable boundaries of behavior.
Whether we perpetuated it.. witnessed it.. or failed to prevent it.. things happen in war.. that makes us question who we are.. and who we can be going forward.
MORAL INJURY IS ROOTED IN THE SENSE OF SHAME.
The idea that there is something morally... and fundamentally.. wrong with us.
It is a deep spiritual challenge... that cuts to the core of who we are.
Our identity… our morality… and relationships… with ourselves... our family… and humanity at large.
I get it.. PTSD is an unpleasant topic ..
and people don’t like to talk about it.
But.. that’s not good for us.
We need to acknowledge it… talk about it.. educate ourselves… in order to begin to heal… and learn how to manage it.
